The Pigeon Finds A Hot Dog by Mo Willems

After reading this story, ask children to write in their journals what they would have done in Pigeon's situation.  In Early Childhood Classrooms, the teacher can lead a rug discussion, where the children discuss together what they would have done.

Next, students will make cardboard Pigeon puppets, and use these to put on their own play.  They can react the events of any of the existing Pigeon stories, or they can come up with new adventures for Pigeon!

For a fun snack, serve mini hot dogs!  See if your class can describe what a hot dog tastes like!

Blogs in the Classroom

A great blog for elementary school lesson plan ideas is http://thefirstgradeparade.blogspot.com.  There are many resources and free printables available on this site that deal with many of the coomon core standards, such as inferencing, estimating and critical thinking and problem-solving skills, and reading strategies, just to name a few!  My favorite aspect of this site, however, is that all of her lesson plans exist in a theme-based curriculum.  So, while she is teaching graphing, she may be doing a unit on apples, and have the children practice graphing by plotting the students favorite/least favorite apples on a graph.  Fun lesson plans that are very educational!
